History
The White Dogwood Tree is a member of the Cornus florida family, an ornamental tree that is deeply rooted in European and American History.
Europeans used the bark of a particular variety of the Dogwood Tree to bathe mangy dogs. It has been documented that Native Americans used the flowering Dogwood to make dye. They also used the bark for medicinal purposes. The bark of the Dogwood was also used by early American settlers in the 1700’s for tea as a fever and cold remedy.
Characteristics
White Dogwood trees have beautiful blossoms comprised of four individual petals. The bark of this Dogwood is silver brown and divides into heavy scaled sections. Expect the flowers to bloom on the White Dogwood to typically emerge in May and last up to four weeks. These beautiful blossoms are 3-5” in size. Afterwards, deep red berries emerge and often last into winter months. This is a favorite for wildlife, particularly song birds. The leaves on the White Dogwood turn a beautiful scarlet red for a spectacular fall show.
The White Dogwood is a very hardy tree that will tolerate drought very well once established. The White Dogwood tree will be approximately 20-30 feet tall and 20-25 feet wide at maturity. White Dogwood trees will not do well in areas where they will have “wet feet”. Another consideration when planting a White Dogwood is that they will bloom less if they are planted in the deep shade. With the ability to grow in most areas the White Dogwood is an excellent tree to plant and forget.
