History

The Pink Dogwood Tree is a member of the Cornus florida family, an ornamental tree with very deep roots in European and American History. Europeans used the bark of a particular variety of the Dogwood Tree to bathe mangy dogs. Through documentation it has been discovered that Native Americans used the flowering Dogwood to make dye. They also used the bark for medicinal purposes. The bark of the Dogwood was also used by early American settlers in the 1700’s for tea that was a treatment for fevers and cold related ailments.

Characteristics

Pink Dogwood trees have beautiful and delicate four petal blossoms that are striking against brownish red bark of the trunk. The flowers of the Pink Dogwood will emerge in early spring and remain for approximately 4 weeks. These beautiful blossoms are 3-5” in size. In the fall deep red berries will emerge and often last into winter months. The berries help make the Pink Dogwood a favorite for song birds. In Autumn you can expect the leaves on the tree to turn a bright crimson.

The Pink Dogwood is adaptable to many types of soil conditions and is extremely resistant to disease. This tree also proves to be very tolerant of drought once established. The Pink Dogwood is a midsize ornamental tree, maturing to approximately 15-25 feet tall and 15-25 wide. Dogwood trees will not do well in areas where they will have “wet feet”. Things to consider when making a Pink Dogwood part of your landscape plans it that they will bloom less if they are planted in the deep shade and they prefer acidic, moist and well drained soil. In addition, when Pink Dogwoods are planted in the deep shade they tend to bloom less.
