History

The Nellie Stevens Holly (Ilex x Nellie R. Stevens) is a hybrid cross of the Chinese Holly and the English Holly and dates back to the mid 1950’s.

Characteristics

The Nellie Stevens Holly is an extraordinarily versatile evergreen. It is a very dense shrub that naturally grows in a pyramidal fashion. Dark green oblong leaves are the backdrop for beautiful scarlet red, shiny berries. The Nellie Stevens is one of the fastest growing hollies and will grow up to 3’ annually once established.

The Nellie Stevens Holly is a tremendously tolerant tree. Drought resistance is a strong suit of the Nellie Stevens. It also possesses the ability to thrive in areas with extreme climate conditions. The Nellie Stevens Holly will reach 15-25’ tall and 5-10’ wide at maturity. This holly prefers soil that is average to slightly acidic and moist but certainly well drained. As far as sunlight goes, the Nellie Stevens again shows us its versatility as it will do well in full sun or partial shade.
